Regulating screen-time? This why Saint Charles Lwanga America Center will help you
Saint Charles Lwanga America Center (SCLAC) utilizes the African Martyrs as social-cultural icons and trailblazers guiding our paths to deeper immersion in American cultures. SCLAC is so many things and through it we hope to conduct several events but here I share two and these are:
1. I have been teaching remedial and after-school classes during undergrad, grad and postgrad.
I noticed that pupils and students were distracted by virtual social media platforms/apps
that they accessed covertly or overtly. In most cases when found, it meant losing points.
I came up with ways to incentivize them but at the same time ensure that no one felt judged.
I developed several self-confidence tools. I want to use Saint Charles Lwanga America Center as a dedicated rehabilitation space addressing the issue of virtual social media addiction.
2. I have had the opportunity to work in clinical, research, development work and education settings in the USA, Europe, Africa and Asia. Communities are looking for ways to address addiction. There are different kinds of addiction.
I am addressing myself to what is emerging as connected to Virtual social media/electronic platforms and devices. These are some of the immediate tools whose use we need to balance.
How we can help:
We employ an approach called the Negotiated Periodic Weaning (NPW) methodology where participants agree to intermittently step back from the phone, laptop and all virtual social media platforms for a span of time. This could be for an hour for every 3 hours of exposure or whatever choice they decided upon. It could also be during riding or driving. They use this time for mindfulness activities. All activities are evidence-based mindful-based cognitive therapy and mindful based stress reduction models.
Our niche is to provide alternatives to reliance on virtual social media platforms such as Facebook, twitter, Instagram, Redditt, Snapchat and others by children, adolescents and adults.
We design community events which also act as learning and skilling sessions to fill up the void, fear of missing out (FOMO) and anxiety following intermittent withdrawal of the phone or laptop or even grounding.
Through Saint Charles Lwanga America Center, we want to scale
the Negotiated Periodic Weaning (NPW) methodology whose activities (stances) leverage better outcomes.
the Negotiated Periodic Weaning (NPW) methodology whose activities (stances) leverage better outcomes.
Some outcomes include:
- A realization that not checking the phone every so often does not mean the end of the world (self-recognition and self-awareness).
- Breaking free from prolonged or repeated patterns that drive stress, anxiety and depression.
- Recognizing low and negative energy and interrupting it with rest, stepping back or not indulging; being present (present-moment attention) and engaging in simple pleasures.
- Discovering provocative situations and de-escalating them.
- Facing stress head-on, recalibrating, making-time, setting-up new intentions, and incentivization.
- Establishing recognition, reward and celebration which are recorded by journaling.
- Time-out to allow the eyes, neck, hand and palms to rest. This is one way of addressing and alleviating fatigue rising from electronic device social media over reliance.
